Common Code Enforcement Violations & Policies of Churchill County
- Storage of inoperable vehicles: Nevada law allows storage of up to two inoperable vehicles unfit for use on a parcel within the nuisance guidelines of the Nevada Revised Statutes.
- Mobile homes used as storage sheds: Mobile homes cannot be used as storage sheds, showrooms, or for any other purpose in which they are not designed.
- Junkyards / scrapyards: An establishment or place of business that is maintained, operated, or used for storing, keeping, processing, buying, or selling junk, or the maintenance or operation of an automobile graveyard or scrap metal processing facility.
- Illegal landfills: CCC 8.04.010 states that it is a misdemeanor to place, deposit, or dump, or cause to be placed, deposited, or dumped any garbage, cans, bottles, papers, refuse, trash, or rubbish. This includes making an open pit to place scrap building materials, trash, garbage, and rubbish to burn and bury.
- Illegal dumping on public lands: There are civil penalties such as a fine of $500 to $5,000 and 40 hours of community service cleaning up dump sites. There are criminal penalties such as a maximum fine of $1,000 and/or up to six months in the county jail. It is important to note that each and every day a dump site exists is a separate offense, and the civil and criminal penalties apply for each day.
- Storage containers: The use of shipping containers or other similar enclosures is allowed as follows: there may be only one shipping container per acre on a parcel, and not more than two (2) containers per parcel in the E-1, R-1, R-2, A-5, A-10, and RR-20 districts; bona fide commercial farming or ranching operations are excluded from this limitation. Shipping containers cannot be stacked and must be maintained in good condition.
- Recreational Vehicle (RV) used as temporary residence: The use of an RV shelter by persons traveling and visiting friends, family, and relatives may be parked on private property outside the confines of a recreational or mobile home park for a period not to exceed 90 days a year.
- If you need to use an RV as a residence for a longer period, you must apply for a Temporary Use Permit (PDF) as outlined in CCC 16.08.070.
