Sheriff Richard Hickox said that on the evening of January 22, his office received information that a Churchill County High School student had reportedly been in possession of a small handgun while in class earlier in the day.
The Sheriff’s Office began an immediate investigation into the incident and ultimately made an arrest on the juvenile after confirming that the teen had been in possession of a small pneumatic pellet gun while in class. The juvenile was subsequently arrested for being in possession of a dangerous weapon on school grounds. No specific threat or target is known at this time. The Sheriff’s Offices believes that the juvenile was acting alone and that the incident is contained, however, the investigation is still ongoing.
“The safety and welfare of the residents and visitors to our beautiful community is a top priority for the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office along with our partner agencies and we strongly urge everyone to report suspicious behavior as soon as possible,” Hickox said. “Thank you in advance for being the voice and eyes of the community and reporting suspicious behavior to your local law enforcement agencies.”
