[ARCHIVED] Local Students Earn Jim Regan Memorial Scholarships

Six local students earned Jim Regan Memorial Scholarships as selected by the Churchill County Employee Management Committee. Five of those students received their scholarships this month at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on May 19. The sixth received hers earlier in the month.

The Regan Memorial Scholarship was established by the family of former County Commissioner Jim Regan, who passed away unexpectedly in 2000 while in office. The scholarship is awarded by the County’s Employee Management Committee composed of county employees. Churchill County employees and their children are eligible for the scholarships which total $6,000. The Jim Regan Memorial Golf Tournament funds the scholarships and will be held this September.

Earning scholarships for 2021 were:

  • Allison Frost, a Churchill County High School senior who works at the Churchill County Museum. She is currently student body president at the high school and is a member of the National Honor Society, Health Occupations Student of America, FFA and is the captain of the varsity tennis team. Allison will attend the University of Nevada, Reno this fall to study speech pathology and audiology.
  • Hailey Guerrero, the daughter of county employees Jorge Guerrero and Julie Guerrero, is also a senior at CCHS where she is a three-sport athlete (soccer, basketball and track). She was worked as a City of Fallon intern and volunteer time at the county’s COVID-19 vaccination and testing site. She will also attend UNR this fall and study biochemistry.
  • Kalea Lattin is a senior at CCHS who works in the Child Support Division of the District Attorney’s Office. She volunteers at a local preschool, is co-founder of a peer mentoring program at CCHS and serves as president of the CCHS International Club and her church youth group. She will attend Southern Utah University in the fall to study chemistry and education.
  • Cason Webb-Penn, the son of Elizabeth Webb who works in Parks & Recreation, has been active in FFA and was the Nevada High School Rodeo Team Roping Champion Heeler while at CCHS. He currently attends Oklahoma Panhandle State University, studying agronomy and serves on the roping team there. He plans to return to Fallon after graduation to work in the field of agriculture education.
  • Thomas Steele, stepson of Naomi Steele of the county Road Department, was an Academic All-State student while he attended CCHS and served on three state championship teams (two basketball, one football). He volunteered at the Fallon Youth Club, with the Sierra Youth Football League and as a scorekeeper in the Fallon Youth Basketball League. He currently attends Truckee Meadows Community College. He has an entrepreneurial mindset and hopes to start his own business upon graduation from college.
  • Callista Perez, the stepdaughter of Shannon Perez in the District Attorney’s Office, is a senior at Oasis Academy where she plays on the softball and basketball teams and serves on the student council. She volunteers at the Fallon Community Theater and is also taking classes at WNC. She plans to attend UNR this fall, majoring in theater.
